The Jimmy Bruen Shield was inaugurated in 1978 the first year that Stackstown won the title at Galway Golf Club and commemorates the late Jimmy Bruen of Muskerry Golf Club who inspired the British & Irish Team to their first win in the Walker Cup at St. Andrews in 1938. Jimmy was only 18-years old at the time and a schoolboy at the Presentation Brothers.
He won the British Amateur Championship in 1946 and many other National Championships, before an injury brought a premature end to his illustrious amateur carrier. Jimmy was renowned for his distance off the tee before technology was even dreamt about. A visit to his home club Muskerry Golf Club will leave the visitor in no doubt about the achievements of this great man.

Enniscorthy hosts qualifiers of Bulmers Pierce Purcell Shield

Congratulations to our Bulmer's Pierce Purcell team managed by Paul Gorby and his assistance Ted Morrissey whose encouraging words to the unchanged pairings before they set off was 'if it aint broke, don't fix it!'. Saturday's pairing of Alan Buckley & John Redmond, Jonathan Dunne & Brian O'Connor, John Rossiter & Joe Wilson, Colin Garry & Peter Jordan with Denis Dunbar standing in for Alan on Sunday. The final qualifying clubs were Enniscorthy v Courtown and Callan v Bunclody with Enniscorthy qualifying from the Saturday with what must surely be a record of 338. Colin Garry & Peter Jordan had a fabulous run with 13 straight pars and two bogeys while a great shot from Jonathan Dunne on the 15th from under a tree was said to be the shot of the day. A little luck on the 16th when the piaring drive hit a tree on the right and found the fairway setting up Brian with a 9 iron onto the green for a 6 feet putt. Next outing will be the quarter finals around mid-June with the semi-finals on the 4th of July.

Next Round: Powerscourt -v- Glenmalure on May the 30th at Charlesland. Winner will meet Enniscorthy. Date yet to be decided. Semi-Finals & Final will be played on the 4th of July in Moath golf Club.

This weekend Enniscorthy Golf Club is one of the clubs playing host to the Provincial play-offs of the Bulmers Pierce Purcell Shield. All week teams have been converging on our course in preparation for the matches to be played over Saturday and the final qualifiers on the Sunday.

Named after Professor Purcell, one of Ireland's outstanding golf administrators, from the 1920s to 1960s, it was won first by Masserene, in 1970. Five foursome pairings represent each club, comprised of minimum individual handicaps of 12 and minimum combined of 27. Coorstown won the Leinster Pennant in 2009 but the over all winners were Letterkenny who captured the Bulmers Pierce Purcell Shield at Tullamore Golf Club. The 2010 Cups and Shields National Finals take place at Castlebar Golf Club from 15th-18th September.

Moore Cup Team Bow Out With Pride

They say it's the taking part that counts and not the winning and with this in mind we turn to the fabulous effort of our Michael Moore Cup team 2010. Losing out to Waterford by the narrowest of margins 4/3 and so close yet so far away. The away team excelled themselves in every manner. An unfortunate Tommy Davitt was unable to play so John Nolan stood in at short notice and then went on to win his match on the 17th. John was to caddy for John Jordan who was out second away but try as he may he was unable to beat his opponent even with pars having been three down, valiantly fought back and finally brought in on the 17th. Tony O'Connor also went down to a strong Waterford side on the 15th while Kevin McCarty won his match on the 17th. At home Paddy Kelly went to the 15th before conceding defeat while Steven Doyle, who has discovered great form of late brought his man in on the 16th. Pat Dempsey put up a courageous battle losing eight shots to his twenty-six handicap opponent and went as far as the 18th before his defeat. Team managers Liam Dunbar and Matt O'Connor couldn't speak highly enough of their squad and they agreed that they lost to a finely tuned Waterford side. We wish our neighbours all the best in their forthcoming encounters in this tournament.
