Well done to our FBD Barton Cup Team!
It was always going to be a tough challenge with an away draw but 'cometh the hour, cometh the team' and team managers Jim Delaney, Richard 'Butch' O'Connor and Liam Spratt could not have imagined a better outcome. At several times our lads were down and on one occasion were down three holes but the fought back to beat a very strong fielded Mount Wolseley team. The absence of some of our key players with Graham Donohoe away playing for his Country and an injured Paul Connolly left the managers very much focusing on the task ahead. As an elated Jim Delaney said after the final tally when asked who are we meeting next he said "I haven't a clue, our aim was to focus solely on today's match and then see where do we go from here. We've a great bunch of lads and it's back to the grindstone now in order to meet the next challenge."
The 2008 champions Enniscorthy safely negotiated the opening round of this years FBD Insurance Barton Cup competition beating Mount Wolseley 3 – 2 on Saturday. It was a tight match and went down to the wire. Nicky Murphy and Robert Ronan were never in trouble in their match at home and won on the 14th.
In the 3 matches away Mark Murphy and Dean Grannell were 3 down after 9 but fought their way back and were unlucky to loose on the 18th.
James Buckley (who stepped in at the last minute for Graham Donohoe) partnered Brian Sinnott and they too were 3 down but again made a terrific fight back and lost on the 18th. Graham Donohoe incidentally was on duty with the Irish Team.
Hughie O’Connor, one of the only 2 remaining players from the team that won in 2008 joined John Hayden and they played superb golf to win on the 16th.
The match came down to the last game at home and Maurice Donohoe and James Morrissey were behind in their match for a long time before they turned it around and were 3 up playing the 16th but lost that and then they pared the 17th to win their game and for Enniscorthy to win the match.
Enniscorthy now face Borris in the next round before the end of April.

Captains' Drive In 2010
Captains Are Born To Be Wild
The golfing year at Enniscorthy Golf Club was officially launched last weekend when both the Lady Captain Bernie Whelan and men's Captain Tom Clifford teed-off on the first hole. One of the noisiest arrivals of any captaincy when decibels approaching health and safety levels were recorded as they arrived on their choice of transport. A motorcycle motorcade roared into the normally tranquil idly of the club car park with Bernie arriving on a 'Boom'. Apparently, it was no secret that this was to be the favoured means of conveyance as both Tom and Bernie are avid motor heads with Bernie's husband Pat a big fan of the motorbike.
In his address prior to the tee-off, President Pat Higgins told the assembled crowd how Tom had served diligently in several positions at various levels on committees over the years. He went on to wish Tom on the members behalf all the best for his tenure as men's captain and hoped Tom would have a happy year. The drive in is one of the major functions within the calendar of any captain and the large attendance was proof of how these captains are held in high regard. Ina Kent, Lady President, commended Bernie to the audience and spoke of how Bernie was well known throughout the Leinster ladies golfing fraternity serving as an Executive Committee Member on the Midlands District I.L.G.U and was noted for her hard work. Ina went on to wish Bernie all the best in her role and hoped she would see the ladies bring home the bacon.
The course was in excellent condition for the event and the weather contributed to an enjoyable nine-hole friendly scramble followed by light refreshment afterwards in the clubhouse.
