Unfortunately, the ladies' 15-hole stableford turkey competition on Tuesday last was postponed due to torrential rain. Congratulations to Margaret Mooney (9) who is the lady's singles matchplay champion this
year. This competition has been run over the past number of months. On August 4, Ann Banville's lady President's day, the top 15 qualified for the club singles matchplay competition. The final was between Margaret Mooney and Stellah Sinnott. Margaret had represented the club on the Junior Cup team, and Stellah was on the Intermediate team, so it was going to be a great final. Both ladies played great golf, but there could only be one winner, and Margaret had the edge, winning on the 16th hole. Congratulations to both worthy competitors. A call to all lady members - Saturday, November 14, is the Martin Doyle Classic. This has always been a great fun day out. It will be a three-team scramble, and the list is up in the locker room for anyone interested in playing. On the night there will be a meal and music and hopefully great craic, so get your names down early. The 'Society's Day' proved a huge success with up to forty societies invited to partake in a round of golf followed by dinner in the spacious clubhouse restaurant. Reports from societies who took part were very favourable, with all guaranteeing their custom for next year and placing Enniscorthy Golf Club as a favoured destination in their diaries. They were greeted by the Honorary Secretary, John Cullen, and provided with 'goody bags' by the professional, Stephen Fitzpatrick PGA. One of the novelties was to 'beat the pro'. This involved getting inside Stephen's drive on the sixth-hole par three. With up to eight feet to spare between marker and pin, no one could manage to get inside this. But the 'champion of societies' went to the 19th team from Courtown made up of Liam Cooper (6) and Donnie Weafer (15) with 44 points closely followed by Brian Hudson (10) and Seamus Hurley (14) representing Kate O'Grady Golf Society (KOGGS) also with 44 points[last 3]. Placed third were Anthony Mulhall (6) and Tony Whelan (12) from BNS Great Island, Campile with 44 points. Many of those present on the day with G.U.I. handicaps suggested returning for the Wednesday fourball that continues until February 24th 2010 (excluding Christmas week), with weekly prizes for first, second and with a grand final on March 3. First prize: two rounds of golf, one
night B&B and one evening meal in the K Club, and numerous other prizes. Visitors pay only 15Euro, with reduced buggy rates and 10% voucher off clubhouse meals. Timesheets are open one week prior to each competition. Following a rest last Bank holiday weekend, the winter alliance continues on Sunday next, sponsored by OCM Construction. Sundays, November 8, 15 and 22, remain. Handicap categories: Cat1, 0-9 and Cat2, 10+. Entry fee for visitors is 20 Euro, members 6 Euro. Overall winner in each category based on best three cards from five outings. Weekly prizes for first, second and visitor in each category. Last results were - category 1, 0 to 9 handicap: 1st, Alan Kenny (5), 42 points; 2nd, Martin Sludds (5), 39 points. Category 2, 10 to 18 handicap:1st, Brian Sinnott (17), 42 points; 2nd, Paul Flanagan (11), 41 points.
The Eugene Redmond Perpetual Trophy 2009 was presented to player of the year James Buckley by Eugene's wife Charlotte and his sister Elaine in the company of the Captain Declan Lyons. Eugene sadly passed away a few years ago but his memory is honoured each year in this presentation. Presentations were also made on the night to John Mernagh winner of the Club Singles sponsored by The Bailey. John fought off a great challenge from his runners up rival Michael Healy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Leo Morrissey for his kind sponsorship. Also present to receive their prizes were the winners John Doyle and
Paddy Mooney and runners up Paul Gorby and Maurice Treacy of the O'Learys' Garage sponsored Club Foursomes. We would like to thank them for their generous sponsorship of this event. The Club sponsored Ladies or Gents Open Fourball presentation also took place last Monday evening with clear winners in first position: M J Murphy (10, Slievenamon) and Mark Murphy (5) 48 points while in second place were Martin Dempsey (6) and Davy Murphy (13) 43 pts [Last 2]. Des Kehoe (8) and Conor Flynn (14) 43 pts took third position and we would like to thank Des for his assistance with photography on the night. Beautiful trophies were on display, and thanks to Ciarán Tobin, the competition Secretary, who gave of his time Sunday morning laying out the crystal in a well designed arrangement. Ciarán is to be complimented for the work he has done throughout the years of his tenure in this busy position.
