The recent wet weather resulted in the ladies competition, sponsored by The Logo Centre, on Tuesday 8th September being cancelled.  However on Tuesday 15th September the ladies were out in force for the President’s prize (John Mernagh) to the ladies which was an 18-hole stroke medal competition.  Conditions were challenging with the course heavy under foot. Despite this there was excellent scoring particularly by the winner Julie McCarthy (16) with a fantastic score of 67 pts on the back 9. In 2nd place Elizabeth Browne (17) with 67 pts.  Gross: Jennifer King (6) 78 gross pts, 3rd: Bernie Webster (21) 68 pts (back 9), 4th: Breda O’Leary (34) 68 pts, Senior Lady: Rita Riordan (29) 71 pts, 5th Ursula Cousins (20) 69 pts and 6th: Elizabeth Atkins (23) 70 pts.

The ladies open senior stableford competition took place last Thursday the17th.  Congratulations to the overall winner Teresa Bailey (18) who took the spoils with a great score of 36 pts. Other winners were:
Cat A:  1st: Liz Askins (22) 35 pts, 2nd: Anna Mai O'Connor (34) 30 pts.  Cat B: 1st: Mary Bolger (21) 32 pts, 2nd: Ursula Cousins (19) 31 pts.  Cat C:  1st: Mary Rochford (17) 34pts, 2nd: Dympna Talbot (28) 33 pts. The next open ladies senior competition is on 15th October which is the last of the year.

The very best of luck to the Ladies Intermediate team and the Junior Cup team who are competing in the National finals in Royal Tara, Co. Meath from Wednesday 23rd September to Friday 25th September.  All support would be greatly appreciated.

The golfing season that saw much activity over the past six months with inter-club tournaments and sponsored competitions draws to a close. But not to leave members and guests without competitive golf there are several club sponsored competitions in the offing. Such a competition was held last weekend with the club sponsoring a gent’s fourball. The scoring was close but in first place were Mark Kenny (16) and Peter O’Sullivan (11) with 46 points which is an excellent result when considering that the format was three-quarter handicap. In second place were Alan Harrington (6) and Alan Kenny (5) with 45 pts just pipping the combo of Martin Dempsey (6) and Lar Ronan (4) 45 pts. Details of the Ladies or Gents Open Fourball Qualifier commencing Wednesday the 7th of October and the Winter Alliance sponsored by OCM Construction that starts on Sunday the 18th of October with visitors at just €20 can be viewed on the notice board and club website.
The final midweek competition sponsored by Ned Hogan Tool Hire took place last Wednesday and Thursday evening and was very well supported with almost 100 golfers taking part in this popular semi open event. Unfortunately the sponsor could not be present due to illness to present the lovely prizes on display so the honour fell to the capable honorary secretary John Cullen who appeared diffident and reticent to make a speech that all agreed was out of character for John. However, the captain had control of the situation and wished Ned a speedy recovery and soon everyone, even those in the Texas hold em brigade were attentive. Breaking with tradition the captain called on all prizewinners to say a few words and several took the opportunity to do so. Seniors winner Terry Hogan (14) with an excellent return of 19 points over the nine holes took the chance to thank his playing partners and to say how the delighted he was to be a recipient of a midweek prize. The course had just been sanded on the Wednesday morning and Terry was wary how the ball would react but in retrospect he felt that it was a necessary task that would pay dividends in the months ahead. As the names were called out in reverse order Vincent Daly (15) was called to the podium next to collect his prize of an XL designer top that will be the envy of the other well dressed golfers in the club carding 19 points no doubt purchased in our pro-shop which carries a large range of current fashion golfing dress-wear. Vinny thanked the sponsor for the array of wonderful prizes and his only regret was that under the rules of his fourball he would grudgingly have to return the princely sum of two Euros waged as would his partner John Jordan. Vinny's handicap took a nosedive when he turned fifty some time ago. Nicky Murphy (6) won the gross with 15 points while making it known to Paul Gorby that it's possible for other low handicappers to the get a look in for the gross prize. Seizing the moment, the captain reminded all present of the debt own to Paul and Eamon Whitty who with indefatigable energy look after the midweek events throughout the summer. A worthy second placed winner was found in Donal Donegan (17) who scored a fabulous 21 points over the nine hole competition. Donal thanked his playing partners and obviously found great form even with a freshly sanded course. But the man of the moment was Tommy Kehoe (14) who just pipped Donal on the back nine returning 21 points and a veteran campaigner he went on to thank his playing partners Matty Mernagh and Mick Wickham. Tommy has had a great golfing year to date winning the Ned Kerrigan Cup and numerous other events seeing and his handicap drop sharply. Tommy took up the game late in life but has made up for lost time and his exploits will be the subject of another tome at a later date. The honorary secretary John Cullen had great pleasure in presenting the first prize to Tommy on behalf of Ned Hogan Tool Hire and there is no doubt that Tommy will feature again soon. The Captain expressed his sympathy on behalf of the officers & members of Enniscorthy Golf Club to Seamus Murphy on the passing of his Father Mr. Paddy Murphy (former Roadstone employee), Pearse Road and to Pat Nolan on the recent death of his Brother Michael and this was echoed by all their friends and fellow members present on the night. A reminder that all first placed winners of each midweek will now go on to play in the 'Champions of Champions' final sponsored by Tommy Cooper, Regional Manager of FRS Training to be set for a later date in the coming weeks.
Ned Hogan Tool Hire Results:
1st: Tommy Kehoe (14) 21 pts,
2nd: Donal Donegan (17) 21 pts,
Gross: Nicky Murphy (6) 15 pts,
3rd: Vincentt Daly (15) 19 pts,
Seniors: Terry Hogan (18) 19 pts.

The final of the club singles took place on Sunday afternoon between Michael Healy and John Mernagh. It was the clash of the Titans with Mick giving John nine shots and John won the match on the 17th in what is believed to have been a great contest and enjoyable exhibition of golf. Neither were available for comment on the night!
