The Captains' Dinner

Winter Ladies

The Captains' Dinner was a resounding success commencing with a wine and cheese reception while the newly formed choir of around 20 members under the conductorship of Michael Dee added a festive atmosphere to the evening.
It was the debút of the choir formed under the banner of the social committee and it is envisaged that the group will perform many times over the Christmas season in the clubhouse and within the community.
Captain Gerry O'connor was delighted to see the large attendance of friends, family and members and all had a great night. The presentations of prizes to the winners of the club competitions were also held on the night and they included the 'Golfer of the Year' Cormac Martin who received the Eugene Redmond Perpetual Trophy from Charlotte Redmond.
Management committee member Sean Earley received his 'Club Singles' award while Martin Sludds and Mary Bolger received their Mixed trophy from the Captain. Also present for their ' Club Fourball' prize were winners Martin Dempsey, next years Vice-captain and Peter O'Shea.

Well done Alan Buckley who had a hole-in-one on the 201 yard 17th hole in Bunclody last Sunday - surely an omen of good things to come in the New Year and congratulations also to the Enniscorthy group of 'Dew Sweepers' and friends who won by a single point in New Ross last Saturday against a select group of locals.

This coming Saturday will see an Open Fourball Competition - Any Combination with a Beef Stew meal just €15 for visitors with a sing-song in the afternoon; weather permitting.

15th Green Commences

New 15th behind the current temporary 15th green
The recently reconstructed 15th green is coming on well and should be ready by the Captain's Drive In '12 if the weather continues to be favourable. Comments about its design and structure have been positive all round. The mild weather brought a large turn out of visitors and members for the Open Fourball last Saturday that included entry into the competition and a beef stew meal for only €15. This offer continues next Saturday with some tee-times still available. The presentation of the yearly prizes will take place next Saturday at 7.30pm prior to the Captain's Dinner for which tickets can be purchased from the Office at just €20 each. Includes cheese and wine reception on arrival followed by four course meal and entertainment. Please support the "Find the Joker" fund-raising for course accessories the next time your in the clubhouse or pro-shop the draw will be held on the last Sunday of every month during Winter season. With the jackpot now at almost €1,600 it would make a welcome windfall to help with the Christmas shopping. The news that the entrance fee to Enniscorthy Golf Club has been suspended until the end of April 2012 has been welcomed by prospective new members. The club also offers membership categories for five-day (€450) and distant (€399). Enquiries should be directed to the Office 9233191 (1) and ask for John. The club choir group are busy rehearsing in the clubhouse Monday and Thursday evenings and hope to début at the Captain's Dinner this coming Saturday evening Nov 26. The first turkey of 2011 was won by veteran Michael Wickham and winners carry a two point penalty in their next Turkey competition. Jim Mackey is organising a Carol Group from the members and anyone interested should contact him. Heavy and persistent rain has caused course closure over the weekend in order to protect the course and maintain it in the excellent condition it has enjoyed due to the labours of the course management and staff. Golf has never been so affordable and now Enniscorthy Golf Club has suspended the entrance fee until April 30 2012. For further details give John in the office a call 9233191. The weather held up well for the annual Societies Day at Enniscorthy where a good day was had by all.

Club 2 Person Team

The first evening of the wine appreciation course went down a treat last Thursday with a Grand Cru turning up for what looks like a popular activity for members on these long dark nights. Thanks again to John O'Dwyer (WSET Diploma) for his guided tour through the wine regions and to the Social Committee for organising this and many other social events. The clubhouse under its manager Barry Whelan carries a large stock of superb wines sourced from a local distributor. Martin Doyle & Sons Senior Gents Open Singles will take place this coming Thursday November 10 and so far the weather looks to remain favourable. The course looked resplendent over the weekend as the contrast in the colours of the trees were highlighted by the welcomed winter sunshine. Unfortunately the frost caused disruption to some early morning tee-times and to the winter league but it burned off quickly to allow golfers out to enjoy the respite from the wind and rain. The Driving Range attached to the club is now floodlight and is open in the evenings. Members should purchase tokens in the bar or from the pro-shop early to avail of this facility. The Christmas Carollers will meet again on Mondays and already many members have shown a keen interest.

The annual Martin Doyle Classic was held on last Saturday. Unfortunately the weather was not so favourable, the ladies who began early fared best. In spite of the inclement conditions a large number of ladies took part in the scramble and returned to the clubhouse later for a super evening's entertainment. This began at 7.30 and continued late into the night. The presentation of prizes was first on the agenda  and the array of prizes was fantastic. Ger Doyle of Martin Doyle & Sons Butchers was on hand to  greet all the ladies in turn as they collected their winnings. This is really the final major event of the season for the ladies and spirits were high as the successes of the year were recounted. Thanks to Barry and his staff for the beautiful food served and to local band "Down and Out" for a great night's music and entertainment afterwards. A huge 'thank you' to Jimmy and Ger for their continued support and sponsorship.
First prize was won by the team of: Jennifer King (5), Mary Egan (36) and Hilary Kehoe (36) with a score of 63.3. However, on this special occasion there was a prize for everyone in the audience and they were received to rapturous applause.
Wine tasting course delivered by John O'Dwyer (WSET Diploma) was a great success last Thursday night. All wines tasted are now on special offer from Barry Whelan in the bar. Wine Appreciation Course (6 weeks) will commence on Thursday November 3. Well done to Social Committee for organising these events for members. The 'Find the Joker' fund-raising is continuing. Envelopes for entry (€2) available in Pro Shop and Bar. All proceeds go to course accessories such as flags, signs, rakes and plants. Draw will take place in the bar on the last Sunday of every month for the Winter season and members and visitors are ask to support. Congratulations to Joan Dunbar and Martin 'Murty' Dempsey who are the incoming ladies and gents Vice Captains respectively for 2012. Good luck in your future roles at Enniscorthy Golf Club.
